Shades of Simon Gray Study Guide

 

The following is a list of items that should be studied before taking the Shades of Simon Gray test.

 

Reread the first page where Simonís accident/suicide attempt occurs.

 

Reread The Waste Land poem by T.S. Eliot, and the prologue and identify if and where examples of the following literary terms are applied:

     Hyperbole

     Personification

     Simile

     Rhyme

     Alliteration

     Onomatopoeia

     Foreshadowing

     Symbolism

     Flashback

    

Be able to discuss the two settings of this novel.

 

Know each of the main characters and his or her role in the project, the investigation, and their relationship to Simon.  Identify the protagonist and antagonist.  Are there any static characters, developing/dynamic characters, minor characters, or stock characters?

 

Reread Simonís Poem Batwings and identify if and where examples of the following literary terms are applied:

     Simile

     Metaphor

     Alliteration

     Personification

 

Be able to identify several themes of the novel including the struggle for ethical behavior, the way individuals perceptions blur reality, the value of healthy relationships, and the role of cheating and rationalization of bad behaviors.

 

Reread all of your written answers from the comprehension packet.  It might be a good idea to call someone that has read this novel and discuss each question.  You might even be able to do this as a table discussion in class if time allows.
